This temple, also known as Balusserry Kotta Paradevta Temple, is one of the most important Vettakkorumakan temples in Kerala. Siva and Parvathy were pleased with Arjuna’s penance and appeared before him. The son born to Siva and Parvathy when they had assumed the form of forest dwellers is known as Vettakkorumakan. As Vettakkorumakan became too powerful, the Devas wanted him sent out of the world. Siva did as they wanted. Vettakkorumakan travelled far and wide and reached Kurumbranadu and married a woman belonging to the famous Kaarakoora family. A child was born to them. The Balusserry fort belonged
more to the Karakoora family but it had been taken over illegally by Kurumbrathiri. When Vettakkorumakan asked him to give back the fort to them, the Kurumbrathiris agreed. But to test Vettakkorumakan they had kept many obstacles on the way. Vettakkorumakan, with his seven-year-old son, overcame all the obstacles and reached Kurumbrathiri. There they found thousands of coconuts heaped up before them. Surprising everybody the boy broke all the coconuts. Seeing the strength of Vettakkorumakan, Kurumbrathiri honoured him with a special position. Vettakkorumakan theyyam is the most important among the theyyams of the Nair community in North Malabar.
