This is the only temple in Kerala where Mahavishnu is consecrated as he appeared in the incarnation as Matya, a fish. The temple is situated at Meenangadi, Wayanad District. The legend about the origin of this temple here is as follows. About 500 years ago a Yogishwara, who passed along the place where the temple stands today, got into a pond there to take a bath. A fish came before him and started jumping around as if in joy. The Yogishwara understood that there was the presence of Mahavishnu in that area. He brought an idol of Mahavishnu and consecrated it on the western side of more the pond facing the east. He consecrated Lord Vishnu as he appeared in his incarnation as Matsya, Matsyaavathaara. The place where the fish (meen in Malayalam) danced in front of the Yogi came to be known as Meenangidi and later changed to Meenangadi.
