History

Atop a scenic hillock in Puthiyangadi, near Elathur, Kozhikode district, Kerala, resides the Puthur Durga Devi Temple. Steeped in history, the temple is believed to be an ancient creation, marked as the 107th Prathista (installation) by the legendary Parasurama himself.  This dates the temple back to a bygone era, whispering tales of devotion and spiritual significance. The temple complex, built in the traditional Kerala style, is said to have been constructed around the 1970s. The architecture itself is a captivating sight, likely adorned with intricate carvings and motifs. more The presiding deity, Goddess Durga, is depicted uniquely here. Unlike many other Durga temples, she is said to manifest in three distinct forms: Durga, the embodiment of strength and power; Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and fortune; and Kali, the fierce destroyer of evil. This unique portrayal underscores the multifaceted nature of the divine feminine. The temple's fame, however, extends beyond its historical significance and captivating idol. The annual Pooram festival, a ten-day extravaganza, is a major draw for devotees. Held during the Malayalam month of Meenam (mid-March to mid-April), coinciding with the Pooram asterism, the festival is a vibrant celebration filled with cultural performances, religious rituals, and a joyous atmosphere. Tragically, the temple's past is not without its blemishes. Historical records suggest it faced destruction during the reign of Tipu Sultan. However, the temple rose from the ashes, a testament to the enduring faith of its devotees. Today, the Puthur Durga Devi Temple stands as a vibrant symbol of devotion, showcasing the multifaceted nature of the divine mother and the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
