Vettikkavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Devotees of the Goddess believe that there is nothing in this universe that does not contain Her power. The Vettikkavu Bhagavathy temple at Irumapnam in Thripunithura is the powerful form of the protector of the universe as Mahishasuramardini is seen in the sanctum. The idol depicts the Goddess standing on the head of the boar as She drives the spear into its head. So, the body of the Goddess in the idol seems to be tilted to the right. It is Goddess Bhadrakali who is depicted and worshipped as Mahishasuramardini. No new rituals have been introduced into the routine of this temple. There are no legends more about the origin of the temple. But the temple is believed to be one among the very few where a thousand Murajapam of the Rig Veda has been recited. Worship is offered every day with Rig, Yajur and Sama Veda mantras and Laksharchana (one lakh times) with Rig Veda mantras every month.
