Vengoor Sree Durga Devi Temple

History

The Vengoor Sree Durga Devi Temple holds the distinction of being the first consecrated Durga Devi Temple by Sree Parasurama among the 108 Durgalayas. Situated in Vengoor (Angamaly), just 3 kilometres from Kalady, the birthplace of Jagadguru Sree Adisankaracharya, and a mere 5 kilometres from Cochin International Airport, it stands as a revered site. Dedicated to the goddess Durga, the temple suffered destruction at the hands of Tipu Sultan's army in 1785, resulting in partial damage to the idol. However, on May 10th, 1963 (AD 1138 Medam 7), the damaged idol was reinstated. Legend has it that Devi has six sisters and one brother. During Pooram days, more after the kodiyettam ritual, Devi is believed to visit her siblings. On Pooram night, she ventures to Manickamangalam and continues her journey to Chengal, Edad, Avanamkode, and beyond to meet all her siblings. In 1995, the administration of the temple was entrusted to the Vengoor Sree Durga Devi Kshethra Samrakshana Samithy Trust, formed with the support of Uranma of Parazhivattom Mana and Mylakodath Mana. Presently, the temple's sanctum sanctorum is undergoing renovation, supported by the devotees' contributions.
