Melur Thalachilavan Temple

History

Centuries ago, a group primarily composed of spice merchants migrated from Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, and settled in the eastern parts of Palakkad, including Kuthanur Padijarethara. Belonging to the Mannadiar community, Shankaran Mannadiar, a turmeric merchant from the Chokkathu Tharavadu, focused his business activities in the Kozhikode area. One day, after completing his work, Shankaran Mannadiar attended the Oottulsavam festival in the nearby Melur village. Filled with immense devotion, he wished for the deity's presence in his village, pledging to organize a festival with the villagers. Upon returning home, he placed a turmeric basket in front of his house. To his astonishment, after his bath, he found himself unable more to lift the basket, experiencing shivers like a 'velichapadu' (preceptor). An astrologer later predicted that, by his wish, Lord Thalachilavan (Kirathamoorthy) had descended from Kozhikode to bless Shankaran Mannadiar and the villagers. Since then, Lord Thalachilavan has been consecrated in the temple, and rituals have been performed. The news attracted a flow of devotees. Chokath Shankaran Mannadiar blessed the devotees after the 'velichapad' ritual, believed to relieve them from sorrows and pains. Word of the temple's blessings reached Raja Shekari Varma, the king of Palakkad, who, lacking an heir, sought prayers from the Chokath family. Blessed by Chokath Shankaran Mannadiar and Lord Melur Thalachilavan, the king's prayers were answered, and the queen conceived. Grateful for the blessings, the king decided to consecrate the deity of Lord Thalachilavan (Kirathamoorthy) below the Bhagavathy temple in the padinjarethara of Kuthanur. This act was intended to bless and relieve all people from their pain. Additionally, the king generously provided paddy fields yielding 5000 paras for the temple's use.
