There is a famous legend about how the temple came to be established at Kakkoor. Centuries ago a Namboothir from Thirumaaraati Kizhakkillam and a Nair, who was his steward, decided to go on a pilgrimage. Kakkoor Kanjirappilly Namboothiri also joined them. After visiting many temples and holy places they reached the Rajarajeswara temple at Thaliparambu. On the way back, they went to worship the Goddess at Kodungalloor. They stayed there for 41 days worshipping the Goddess. When they were getting ready to return home, the chief priest gave them a Kannadi bimbam and asked them to worship it to bring prosperity to their families and the
more area where they lived. Nair was given a sword and anklets and asked to serve as the oracle of the Goddess. The idol was placed at the eastern part of the Kizhakillam house and worshipped with devotion. Later a temple was built at the place where Edapprakavu stands today and the idol was consecrated there. The annual celebration was to be on the star Aswathy in the Malayalam month of Kumbham and Garudan thookkam, a special offering that is done at very few Dev temples, was to be performed on the next day. After many years, there was a difference of opinion about this special offering between the two Namboothiri families and Kanjirappilly Namboothiri walked out of the temple. He was much disturbed about what had happened. That night he had a dream in which the Goddess told him that on the day of star Karthika, she would be at the base of the banyan tree at Kakkoor. She instructed him to invoke the effulgence that he saw there and consecrate it for worship. The base of the banyan tree is considered the original place of worship for the Ambassery kavu. Thus, Ambassery Kavilamma was consecrated as the younger sister of Edapprakkavilamma
