Malanada Maladeva Temple

History

This temple at Pavithreswaram in Kottarakara Thaluk of Kollam district is the only temple for Shakuni in India. It is believed that Shakuni attained salvation and joined Lord Siva at this place.  There is a big granite stone inside the temple. Shakuni is believed to have sat there in penance for pleasing Lord Siva. Unlike in other temples, there are no pujas offered here. Instead, devotees bring toddy, silk cloth and tender coconut for Shakuni. Mainly it is the tribe of Kuravar that worship Shakuni. They believe that Shakuni was taking revenge against the Kuru dynasty. Bheeshma had forced Shakuni’s sister Gandhari to marry the blind Dhrutharashtra. more Bheeshma and Pandu had attacked their land and imprisoned Shakuni’s father and brothers. It was his father who gave him all the limited food that was given to them. While all the others died of starvation, Shakuni lived to take revenge on Kuruvamsha. He had the dice made from his father’s bones by which he could always win. Thus, he managed to make the Pandavas and Kouravas fight and destroy all of them. Once his aim was fulfilled he merged with Lord Siva at this place.
