Kannur's Kankol Siva Temple has its roots in the Brahmanda Purana, where Kapila Maharshi selected the site for an Agnihotra yagna. Kapila established an ashram, initiating preparations for the yagna, but faced opposition from Asuras who sought to thwart the ritual. They attacked the ashram and the yagna grounds. Seeking assistance, Sage Kapila implored Parashurama, who successfully defeated the Asuras, ensuring the completion of the yagna. The legend holds that various Hindu deities congregated at the site to partake in the offerings, sanctifying the area. Pleased with Kapila's piety, Shiva and Goddess Bhagavathi manifested in swayambhu form. For countless years, the area remained untouched and transformed into
more a forest. Eventually, two individuals exploring the woods discovered a swayambhu Shivling, leading to the establishment of the temple. Remnants of Sage Kapila's ancient yagna site, marked by colossal standing boulders and distinct soil, can still be observed about a kilometre from the current temple.
