Mattam, the place where the Thattarambalam temple stands was the capital of Otanadu in the ancient days. The King of Otanadu had brought some gold smiths from Tamil Nadu for the construction of the Kandiyoor temple. They had consecrated the Goddess whom they worshipped there. Later the King rebuilt the temple. When the royal rule came to an end the temple came to be under the Travancore Devaswom Board. The Thattarambalam temple has been mentioned in the famous composition of the fourteenth century, “Unnuneelisandesham.
