Mudapuram Thengumvila Bhagavathy Temple

History

The temple in the present form was built by the eldest male member of the Valiyavilakathth family. He had a dream from which he understood that there was a divine power at the spot. So, he built the temple and consecrated the idol made of the trunk and root portion of a jackfruit trees. Legends speak about a Siva temple on the banks of the Kadinakulam lake built by the king of Venad. One Namboothiri from the village was given charge of performing the pujas of the temple. Once when the King of Attingal visited the temple, one more of his officers liked the behavior, looks and knowledge of the priest there. He gave his daughter in marriage to the priest. They had a son who was not good-looking and was also lame. He soon lost his father and mother. His mother used to worship the idol of the Goddess that she had brought from her ancestral house. The boy decided to go to his mother’s house with the idol. An old lady he met at the temple was ready to show him the way to his mother’s house. As they were going by boat, the idol fell into the water and the young man jumped into the lake to retrieve it. He failed to find the idol and on coming back to the boat found that the old lady too had disappeared. But he heard the lady calling him from the banks and reached there. He saw the idol and the old lady getting merged with the idol. So, he consecrated the idol there and built a small structure. Later this was washed away by the flood waters. It was the Karanavar of the Valiyavilakathth family who came to know of the presence of the Goddess there and constructed the temple.
