Maruthorvattom Dhanwanthari Temple

History

Maruthorvattom Sree Dhanwanthari Temple derives its name from 'Marunnu Oru Vattam' in Malayalam, meaning a single dose of medicine. This term is associated with the renowned Ayurvedic doctor, Vellodu Moos, who resided here approximately 600 years ago. It is believed that a remedy administered by Vellodu Moos could alleviate even chronic ailments. The temple houses the idol of Lord Dhanwanthari, which was originally worshipped in the pooja room of a Brahmin. This idol was gifted to Vellodu Moos by a Kshatriya devotee from Vayalar, 8 kilometres from Maruthorvattom. According to legend, the devotee, inspired by a revelation in his dream, retrieved the idol hidden in the more temple pond named 'Kelan Kulam' in Cherthala South. He then donated it to a deserving Brahmin, anticipating permanent relief from his chronic peptic ailment.
