Niramkaitha Kotta Temple

History

Niramkaitha Kotta Temple, dedicated to Ayyappa, is located in Vallikunnu Grama Panchayath in the northernmost part of the Malappuram district in Kerala. With a history dating back a thousand years, it is one of the prominent Dharma Sastha temples in the Malabar region. The temple is renowned for its ancient origins, and it is said that the water from its well, believed to be from the holy river Ganges, neither dries up nor overflows. This sacred water, located in an underground well within the temple, is collected by the priests through a specific passage. The well possesses unique qualities, as its holy water remains unaffected by seasonal more changes. Adjacent to the temple complex is the Mekkotta Bagavathy Temple, situated atop a hill. The expansive temple complex spans 50 acres at the hill's base, with the peak reaching 500 feet above sea level. A noteworthy structure within is the 'Pattukottil,' featuring a large construction with a roof covered in copper sheets. A wooden carving depicting the 'Balakanda' of the Ramayana is housed here. Adjacent to this structure is the 1500-year-old Ayyappa temple, with legends suggesting that the Ayyappa image is a 'Swayambhoo,' self-manifested.
