Chingoli Kavilpadikkal Devi Temple

History

In ancient times this place where Kavilpadikkal Devi Temple situates was a thick forest where lived all sort of animals. It was the part of khandava forest where roar of lions echoed due to its heavy migration in that area. The name of this place thus became Chingoli (chingam is the colloquial version of Malayalam word Simham = lion, oli = roar, sound). Decades ago a sage came to this place and started to pray before his favourite Goddess Bhadrakali. Finally Goddess appeared for him and bestowed blessings upon him. His long and sturdy penance gradually made him equal to more God. Presence of both Goddess and this Sage was kept intact by the nature. When this area got populated with human beings some Brahmins who lived there identified the presence of the Goddess and the Sage. Several incidents backed up their presence in that holy place. On that basis a temple was constructed according to the thanthric rules and the Goddess was consecrated and installed in the temple. This old and famous temple is known as Kavilpadikkal Devi Temple where devotees get infinite blessings from the Goddess. In 26th January 1995  an ashtamangalya prasna was conducted there. It concluded that the temple was 652 years old and it had been ruined completely two times before. It also added that the temple is facing its third destruction because of several reasons such as avoiding traditional systems of rituals and avoiding traditional systems and unholiness of the times.  It was also found that the insolence to Snakes who are the real owners of the temple and disrespect to the presence of the Sage who became God are the other causes of temple destruction. Considering all these drawbacks the Serpent Gods were consecrated and installed under the leadership of the Namboothiri from Pambumekkattu Mana. Due to the blessings from the Serpent Gods and Goddess the renovation works of the temple started. Temples for the sub deities Ganapathy, Subrahmanian, Yogeeswaran, Siva, Yakshiyamma, Sastha and Sreekrishna swami were constructed. After the renovation works the consecration ceremonies and rituals were celebrated on 24th January 1996. On 1st February 1998 dhwaja-prathishta (flag pole) also has been celebrated and thus it has  become one of the great temples. All the temple rituals and programmes are performed according to the instructions given by Brahmasree Puthumana Sreedharan Namboothiri and Vadakkemoodambady Vasudevan Bhattathiri. In this temple a devotee can conduct all offerings just like other Great Temples. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is famous. The basement of it starts from the sea level and is constructed as a well. Above the well is made thee square panjavargathara of three feet and the Goddess is sitting there blessing all the devotees. Festival of the temple starts from Sivarathri onwards in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. Flag hosting is on Sivarathri and the holy bathing (arattu) of the Goddess is on karthika star. Consecration Day, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Vijayadasami, Pongala are also celebrated. The parayeduppu festival of this temple is very famous and it is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram.
