Pambummekkatu Mana

History

Pambummekkatu Mana, situated in the tranquil village of Pampady along the river banks of Nila (Bharathappuzha) in Kerala, holds a historical legacy dating back to around 1000 AD. Positioned near the revered Temple Town Thiruvilwamala, known as Punya Bhoomi (Sacred Land), Pampady boasts of religious significance. Although geographically closer to Palakkad, it is part of Thrissur District. Pampady's sacred aura is intertwined with Thiruvillwamala, housing the legendary Vilwadrinatha temple, Punarjani Caves, Ivor Madom, Sree Parakkottukavu Bhagavathi temple, Someswaram Siva temple, and Kodakkurussi Appan Siva Temple. The name 'Pampady' translates to 'the place where the serpent danced' in Malayalam, signifying the ancient presence of serpents in the area. Notably, Pambady more Pambum Kavu (Sree Nagaraja Temple), situated 2 kilometres east of Pampady Township, is a prestigious Naga temple with a history rooted in snake worship dating back centuries. The temple, devoid of a man-made idol, reveres Nagaraja and Nagakanya, the main deities, within serpent mounds that emerged from the earth on their own (swayambhoo) in Sivaakara. Snake worship, deeply ingrained in Hindu mythology, reflects the veneration of nature. This practice, prevalent in Kerala, is exemplified by sacred groves (Sarpakavu) that serve both cultural and ecological purposes. The origin of snake worship in Kerala traces back to Lord Parasurama, who, after reclaiming the land from the sea, sought Lord Siva's advice to appease Vasuki, the King of serpents. Parasurama's reverence led to the serpents becoming guardians of the land, with the name 'Pampady' symbolizing the place where snakes danced. The tradition of daily poojas for Nagaraja was entrusted to a Maharishi, and later, to a devoted couple, Kooliyil Narayanan Nair and his wife. Their unwavering worship has left an indelible mark on Pambady Pambum Kavu, which continues to be administered by their successors, carrying forward the rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
