It is believed that this temple was consecrated by Khara Maharshi. The place where the temple stands was a forest without any human habitation. Later people started living there and it was for them that the consecration of Mahadeva was done. When the immediate vicinity of the temple was cleared, the idol consecrated by Khara Maharshi was revealed. Then that idol was also worshipped. The well in the temple today was a part of a lake and celestial maidens are believed to have come there to play. Later when invaders attacked the place, the idol was deformed and the temple was destroyed. Then some Brahmin families came
more forward to reconstruct the temple. Lord Siva as he gave the weapon Pashupathasthra to Arjuna is consecrated facing the west and Sree Parvathy Devi is consecrated facing the east. The temple of Karthyayani Devi which had been left uncared for long was taken up by this temple and brought back to glory.
