Kanakadhara Mahalakshmi Temple

History

Situated in Chhedanagar, Mumbai, the Lord Muruga temple witnesses an annual Navarathri festival featuring the Nava chandi homam dedicated to Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswathy. During one such festival in 2001, a decorative depiction caught the attention of Sri Rajappan Nair from Chhedanagar. The portrayal depicted the Kanakadhara story, where a young lad with an extended begging bowl receives a dry gooseberry from a poor lady, with Goddess Lakshmi in the background showering golden gooseberries. Rajappan Nair, Intrigued, sought information about the event's location. Balasubramanian, not familiar with the place, suggested it might be Kaladi, connected with the story of Sankaracharya. However, Rajappan Nair insisted it was Punnorkode, his more native place, pointing to Swarnathu mana as evidence. Persistently discussing Kanakadhara Swarnathu mana and the desire to build a monument and Mahalakshmi temple, Rajappan Nair eventually convinced Balasubramanian to financially assist in acquiring land from the owners of Swarnathu Punnorkode mana. Forming the Sri Adi Sankara Kanakadhara Smaraka Trust, Rajappan Nair acquired a plot of land, but progress stagnated for five years. Seeking astrological guidance, Balasubramanian and friend Sri Satyanathan participated in a Deva prasnam. The revelation was that the goddess and Sankaracharya awaited manifestation for centuries, intending to bestow grace upon humanity and make the place a renowned pilgrim centre. Despite initial scepticism, the construction gained momentum, and the foundation stones were laid by five individuals representing different aspects. The first phase of the temple, including the gopuram, Sri Sankara Dhyana Kendra, Trust office, and more, was completed in September 2013 at a cost exceeding Rs.1.30 crore. The inauguration took place on November 17, 2013, with the Dhyana Kendra unveiled by Padmashri Dr M Leelavathy. The project faced challenges, but, as revealed in the Devaprasnam, it persisted without pauses due to financial constraints, material shortages, or personnel issues. The temple, now attracting devotees from across India and beyond, stands as a testament to perseverance and divine guidance, fulfilling the vision of Sri Rajappan Nair and the Sri Adi Sankara Kanakadhara Smaraka Trust.
