History

Mararikulam Sree Mahadeva Temple is a century old important temple situated at Alleppey district in between Alleppey and Cherthala one kilometer west from NH-47 road and Mararikulam Junction. This powerful temple where self originated idols of Sree Parvathi and Sree Parameswara sits face to face. Maheswara is in a Marari Bhava and Parvathi in a swayamvara bhava. As per legends God Parameswara after the departure of SatheeDevi, went for strong meditation attains a Marari Bhava and Sathi took rebirth as Parvathi and pray the meditating Maheswara to get him as her husband. Mahadeva Temple decorates an important position in siva temples in Kerala and a rare phenomenon more of Arattu (bathing) of god is done in sea. Thanthic is by Vaikom Monattu Illam and administration is by Paduthol Pazhoor Mana. Navagraha, Dhanwanthari, Subramanya, Sastha and Yakshi are co-deities. The Kamari feature of Mahadeva sitting in this temple is highly salvation flowing and with Parvathi’s  presence  more benevolent and desire giving. Special pooja’s are Swayamvara pooja and Thalicharthu as the goddess is swayamvara Parvathy and helps to remove the hardles for marriage. For achieving your wishes Saisyam Mahanivedhyam, Aayiramkudam (1000 pots) Ksheeradhara (Milk Bath) Mruthyunjaya pushpanjali, Navagraha Pooja, Palpayasam etc. are also done with due importance. The festival commences with the hoisting of the flag ten days prior to the Aaraat which falls on the new moon day in the Malayalam month of Kumbham.  Maha Sivarathri is celebrated as very auspicious day in the Temple. Devotees keep awake during the night till the sivarathri pooja is done by lighting lamps and prayers. Sayanapradakhina after fasting on this auspicious day removes all worries in your life and helps to fulfill your wishes. The bathing in sea and the procession in connection with that also is very famous. Sathabhishekam, Kalabhabishekam, Pushpabhishekam are done on Thiruvathira day in the month of Dhanu. All the three gods Mahadeva, Bhagavathy and Mahavishnu come together for this holy bathing. Other special days are ‘Parayeduppu festival for twenty one days in connection with Navarathri, Laksharchana, Puranayanjam, Ashtami Rohini, Mandala festival, New year festival, Hrushabha Vahana procession with Shanipradosha etc. All pradosha eve there will be special poojas with ‘Abhi sheka. Shani pradosha is observed on Saturdays when fortnights with thriyodeshy and pradosha come together. On this day god is taken out in a solemn procession on Hrushabha Vahana made of silver. This process is followed during the Pradosha days while festivals are celebrated also. Maha Sivarathri, Thiruvathira, Ashtami Rohini, Navarathri etc are the major festivals in this famous temple.
