Pathirikunnath Mana

History

There are only a few Namboothiri families in Kerala who have the traditional right to perform worship of the Nagas. Among the most important is Pathirikunnath Mana in Muntakkottukurussi village of Palakkad district. It is also known as the Pathirikunnath mana. The tradition of Serpent worship in this Mana is believed to go back 1400 years. Once a couple in Mana did not have any children long after marriage. The Brahmin worshipped Ayyappa who was consecrated in the village. Dharma Shastha instructed the Brahmin to worship Vadakkumnathan. The Lord at Thrissivaperur was pleased with the Brahmin and appeared before him and told him to return to more his house. The Brahmin described all that happened to his wife. Soon his wife was pregnant. She gave birth to a boy and a serpent.  Both of them grew up in the house. People who visited the house feared the serpent who was always inside the house with the boy. At last, both the father and the mother told the serpent that if he continued to live in the house nobody would come there. The Serpent was saddened to hear the word; especially from his mother. He said that from that time onwards no one would see him inside the house. But he wanted to get something to eat from the women of the house every day. His mother promised to ensure that. Promising that this Serpent would bless people to have children, the serpent disappeared into a stone in the Northern room of the house.  People visit this place to get rid of the curse of serpents.
