Velam Sree Maha Ganapathi Temple

History

Velam Sree Maha Ganapathi Temple is in Mayyil, 20 kilometres from Kannur. While the main deity is Lord Shiva, the temple is renowned for its sub-deity, Lord Ganesha. Adjacent to the temple, there is a sacred pond where devotees cleanse their faces, hands, and feet before entering. Small fishes inhabit the pond. Within the temple complex, there are two sanctums dedicated to the same God, Lord Shiva. The larger sanctum is dedicated to Lord Siva as Rajarajeswara. Within this sanctum, there are shrines for sub-deities, including Lord Ganesha, Dakshinamurthy, and Goddess Parvathi. The smaller sanctum is devoted to Lord Siva as Vaidyanatha, and is believed to be more 2000 years old, while the larger shrine is estimated to be 1000 years old. Despite attempts by Tippu Sultan's forces to destroy the temple, much of it remains intact. The primary offerings at the temple are made to Lord Ganapathy and include Muttarakkal (coconut), swarna kombu (golden tusk), vellikomb (silver tusk), sarkarapaayasam, and neypayasam. For Lord Siva, the offering is neyvilakku. Adjacent to the temple complex is a shrine for Lord Sree Krishna, where marriages are solemnized. Offerings for Lord Sree Krishna include Tulasimala and Neyvilakku.
