Thootha Bhagavathy Temple

History

Thootha Sree Bhagavathy Temple, located on the banks of the Thootha River, is a prominent Bhadrakali temple in Malabar. The annual Thootha Pooram is a captivating spectacle. This event marks the conclusion of the pooram (festival gathering) season in the Valluvanadu region and is considered one of the largest poorams following the Thrissur Pooram. The festivities are enhanced by traditional percussion ensembles, including Panchavadyam, Pacharimelam, and Pandimelam. The highlight of the celebration is the renowned elephant pageantry adorned with muthukkudas (sequined, glittering umbrellas) and venchamarams (white whisks), creating a delightful sight. The Kaala Vela takes place on the Makam asterism of the Malayalam month of Medam, while the more Pooram festival occurs on the Pooram asterism.
