Manarcad Sree Bhagavathy Temple is situated 10
Kilometers East of Kottayam town and 1.5km from Manarcad junction at Manarcad
to Kidangoor roadside. Legend says this Devi is in the form of ‘Bhadrakali’ and
originally is ‘Kodungalooramma’. A noble old Brahmin from Thanniyil illam of
Elambhanakattu used to go to Kodungalloor Devi temple every month. He was a
firm believer of Kodungalloor Devi and feared his observation of vow of
visiting his favorable goddess may end due to old age, weakness and illness. He
prayed before Devi to help him and show a way to overcome this. During night he
had a dream that there will
more
be an umbrella near him when he wakes up and Devi’s
presence will be there in that umbrella. Devi advised him to take the umbrella
to his native and further need not come to Kodungalloor. Brahmin saw umbrella
when he woke up and as per Devi’s advice he took the umbrella and proceeded to
his house. After a long journey for a little rest he kept the umbrella down at
Srayil plot in Irumbanakadu. To continue his journey he tried to lift the
umbrella but he failed. He informed the matter to the local Thampuran and his
astrologers. They performed a ‘Prasna’, which confirmed the presence of
Kodugallooramma in that place. That night Brahmin had again dreamed that a
serpent is sitting south side the spot where he placed the umbrella and that a
temple may be constructed in that place. He informed this matter to the ruler
and other important persons of the local area. They constructed a temple in the
place. The serpent vacated the place respecting Devi to a corner of the temple.
Construction of the temple was done by people from 28 ½ villages in that area.
Ruler Vembalanattu king gave an offering of seven Garudan Vazhipadu and did the
installation of Devi. Representatives from 23 ½ villages of the area select a
committee and they administer the day to day affairs of the temple.
