Tharamekkavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple

History

Tharamekkavu Sree Bhagavathy Temple, located in Thripunithura, has a rich history spanning over 2000 years. Originally, the land on which the temple now stands was owned by the Othikkans, who had a Bhagavathy temple in the Thekkumbhagam area. Eventually, the Othikkans relocated, and the King of Kochin enlisted carpenters and builders from Tamil Nadu, previously residing near Ambalapuzha, to undertake temple construction for the Kochin Royal Family. The vacated land was allotted to the craftsmen, who brought their Bhagavathy idol, housed in a sword and anklet. This divine power merged with the existing Bhagavathy in the old temple. The craftsmen performed traditional poojas with Guruthy at more the temple, and later, the consecration and other rituals were overseen by the Thanthri from the Puliyanoor family. Notably, the consecrated idol in this temple is unique, sculpted in stone to depict the pleasant visage of Bhagavathy with eight hands. The main sanctum also houses Lord Veerabhadra alongside Bhagavathy. Subordinate deities include Moolaganapathy, Hanuman, Ayyappan, Shilpaguru, Vettakkorumakan, Mariyamma, and Siva. Additionally, Lord Subrahmanya is enshrined in a Valkannadi with six angles.
