Kizhakkathil Sree Bhagavathy Temple

History

Kizhakathil Sree Bhagavathy was the family deity of the Thrippappoor Swaroopam that ruled Venad 500 years ago. As the dynasty was on the verge of extinction, a magician tried to draw the effulgence of the Bhagavathy into a pot to save the kingdom. But he failed to draw the Devi who attained her full form. But at that time a man from the lower cast who had gained spiritual eminence managed to contain the shine in his heart and carried it far away to a place near the sea and the lake on the west. There the effulgence became all-pervading and a Yogi who more was meditating there realized the presence and prayed to the Goddess who was the cause for the creation of the universe. As the effulgence became calm, he consecrated Her some distance from the point where the lake met the sea. This place was famous as the one that offered refuge from the difficulties caused by the angry serpents. Later another member of the family of this Yogi realized the presence of Lord Subrahmanya and consecrated him at the Kizhakkayil temple and attained samadhi at that spot. So, the worship, pujas and other rituals offered to this Subrahmanya differ from what is done at other places. The members of the family continued to manage the affairs of the temple for a long time. Then a trust was formed. There are separate shrines for Ganapathi, Shaasthaavu, DurgaDevi, Thampuran and Guru.
