Urupunyakavu Temple

History

Urupunyakavu Temple, also known as Moodadi Urupunyakavu Temple, is among the 108 Durga Temples constructed by Lord Parasurama to foster the prosperity and well-being of Kerala. Located approximately 850 meters from Moodady town, the temple graces a hillside between the Kozhikode-Kannur National Highway, overlooking the intricately shaped Arabian Sea. The temple is referred to as Oru Punyakavu, Urupunyakavu, and Gurupunyakavu. Designed by Lord Parasurama to shield the region from the relentless monsoon seas, the temple venerates Goddess Jaladurga as its primary deity. Additionally, Lord Ayyappa and Lord Ganesh are also revered within its sacred confines. The temple grounds boast five consecrated ponds brimming with sanctified water. One of more these ponds is housed within the temple premises, supplying the holy water utilized in various poojas and ritualistic ceremonies. Despite its elevated hilltop location, the site miraculously yields water with just minimal excavation, exemplifying its sacred significance.
