Sree Venugopala Temple Azhiyoor

History

This temple is at Chungath in Azhiyoor. In 1938 a committee was formed to celebrate the birthday of the spiritual leader Sree Narayana Guru at Chungath. During the celebrations, the temporary structure caught fire and the rituals could not be concluded. An astrological consultation was held to find out the reason for the fire. The astrologer expressed his findings that there had been plans to construct a temple at Chungath which had been dropped. He advised the committee that the time was suitable for the successful completion of the proposed temple. As a result of the efforts of the committee Venugopala Bhajanashala was established. A photo of more Lord Venugopala was kept there and worship and bhajans were conducted every Saturday. Later on, Guruvayoor Ekadashi and Chathayam, the birthday of Sree Narayana Guru were also observed there. It was known that there was the presence of the Goddess in that place and some people referred to as Pattanikal, used to come there every year for poojas. They would erect tents conduct worship and throw the tent in the sea at the end of the programme. It was also said that on the southwestern part of the place where the temple stands, there were facilities for providing drinking water to the cattle. People used to bring Copra (dried coconuts) either carrying it on their heads or loading it on animals and they used to rest there. Changes were made in the Bhajanamadhom after 1973 when a society was registered. An idol replaced the photo kept there. Subordinate deities were consecrated and additional structures for the temple were built. A committee for the renovation of the temple was formed in 1992 and the consecration was performed in 2006. This is one of the few temples in the Malabar area where the marble statue of Sree Narayana Guru has been enshrined. Devotees experience the effulgence of the Goddess, Lord Venugopala and Sree Narayana Guru in this temple.
