Karikkad Subrahmanya Dharmasastha Temple

History

Karikkad Subrahmanya Dharmasastha Temple traces its origins back to the 10th century AD. The village of Karikad is traditionally regarded as one of the 64 villages established in Kerala by the Parshuram Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu. Historically, this village held significance as a prominent settlement for Yajurvedi Brahmins. Initially, the temple housed the murti of Vadakkum Thevar. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the shrine was destroyed, leading to the disappearance of the murti. Subsequently, a new shrine dedicated to Thekkum Thevar was erected, accompanied by the installation of a fresh murti. Interestingly, the partially damaged murti of Vadakkum Thevar was eventually recovered. In recognition of its significance, a more separate shrine was constructed to house this murti. The installation of the Sasta murti within the temple is attributed to individuals who sought refuge, fleeing their villages to escape the turmoil of the Mahabharata era. Today, this temple stands as a pivotal religious institution under the purview of the Malabar Devaswom Board.
