Sree Agasthya Maha Temple

History

The revered Sree Agasthya Temple in Kannur traces its origins to an ancient tale. Agasthya Muni, deeply engrossed in his spiritual practices, once meditated in the serene environs of Tapovanam, along the banks of the Vallapattanam River. Here, where the temple now stands, he devotedly worshipped a Shiva Linga, while Lopamudra Devi diligently joined him in these rituals for twelve years. Their unwavering devotion ushered in an era of prosperity and abundance. The culmination of their penance led to the establishment of a grand temple at this sacred site. However, destiny had its course, and after twelve years, Agasthya Muni and Lopamudra Devi departed to fulfil other more divine duties. Time witnessed a calamitous turn as the region, including 49 nations, faced catastrophic floods, devastating the temple and leaving only remnants in its wake. Subsequent droughts transformed the once-thriving area into a dense forest. In a bid to revive the sanctity of the land, King Sadasoman erected the Agasthya Mahakshetram on the same sacred ground, entrusting its governance to the Namboodri community. However, disputes arose when King Udaya Varma contested the Namboodri's claim of inherited authority. This discord culminated in a conflict between the Kolathri and Namboodri clans, resulting in the Namboodri's defeat and King Udaya Varma assuming control over the temple and surrounding village. During the tumultuous reign of the Tipu Sultan, many temples faced destruction, compelling the Kolathri clan to seek refuge in neighbouring regions. Amidst these upheavals, the revered Shiva Lingam from the ancient temple remained preserved, deeply buried beneath the earth, where the current Agasthyeeshwara Lingam stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of faith and devotion.
