History

10 kilometers east of Kottayam town and 1 ½ km from Manarcadu junction at Kidangoor stands  this Devi temple. All the buses from Kottayam via Manarcadu to Ayarkunnam, Palai, Thodupuzha, Kidangoor, Erattupetta, Kooroppada, Pallickathode take you to the temple junction which leads to the Holy shrine of Manarcadu Devi Temple Legend says this Devi is in the form of ‘Bhadrakali’ and originally is ‘Kodungalooramma’. A noble old Brahmin from Thanniyil illam of Elambhanakattu used to go to Kodungalloor Devi temple every month. He was a firm believer of Kodungalloor Devi and feared his observation of vow of visiting his favourite more goddess may end due to old age, weakness and illness. He prayed before Devi to help him and show a way to overcome this. During night he had a dream that there will be an umbrella near him when he wakes up and Devi’s presence will be there in that umbrella. Devi advised him to take the umbrella to his native place and that he need not come to Kodungalloor any more. Brahmin saw the umbrella when he woke up and as per Devi’s advice he took the umbrella and proceeded to his house. After a long journey, for a little rest, he kept the umbrella down at Srayil plot in Irumbanakadu. To continue his journey he tried to lift the umbrella but he failed to move it. He informed the matter to the local Thampuran and his astrologers. They performed a ‘Prasna’, which confirmed the presence of Kodugallooramma in that place. That night Brahmin had again dreamed that a serpent was sitting on the south side of the spot where he had placed the umbrella and that a temple may be constructed in that place. He informed this matter to the ruler and other important persons of the local area. They constructed a temple in the place. Respecting Devi , the serpent vacated the place to a corner of the temple. Construction of the temple was done by people from 28 ½ villages in that area. Ruler Vembalanattu king gave an offering of seven Garudan Vazhipadu and did the installation of Devi. Devi oracled to conduct 51 day long “Kalamezhuthum and Pattum” and ordered to draw Nagaraja also in the Kalam. Sub deities of the temple are Nagaraja, Nagayakhsi, Kshethrapalaka and two yakshis. Near the temple are temples of Ganapathy, Dharma Sastha  and Subramaniya. Kumbha Bharani, Meena Bharani and Pathamudayam ( pathamudayam means 10th day of the month Medam) are the main annual festivals of the temple. On  Kumbha Bharani the play starts from the Srayil plot where Devi sat first with the umbrella. Meena Bharani is Devi’s birthday. Special poojas, burning of earthen pots (Kalam Karickal) and Bharani feast are conducted during these days. During night Thookam and Garudan Thookam are played (A dance performed in the temple to please the goddess). Eleven Garudas standing in separate cells of a single cart made of wood is an offering that can be seen only at Manarcadu temple. Devotees pull the cart to the shrine and submit the offering for Devi. ‘Kalam Karickal’ is done by ladies for Mangalya Bhagyam (luck to get married), Dheerga Sumangaly(long happy married life) and families prosperity. A Hindu religious convention is conducted during ‘Patham udayam’ festival. Representatives from 23 ½ villages of the area select a committee and they administer the day to day affairs of the temple.
