Valiyavilakam Devi Temple

History

Kappil, a natural marvel of ancient times, has long been revered as both a pilgrimage site and a scenic wonder. Visitors from far and wide have been drawn to this place of spiritual significance. Among them was a family from 'Akavoormana,' who arrived on a pilgrimage. During their visit, a woman from this family found herself isolated and stranded in Kappil. Fortunately, a compassionate individual from the vicinity noticed her frail state, and helped, and cared for her over several days. The altruistic act caught the attention of a local landlord, who promptly informed the reigning King of Venadu, who was resting nearby. Upon learning the circumstances, more the King intervened, allowing the couple to unite and exempting the area from taxation as a goodwill gesture. However, their union was not immediately blessed with offspring. In their earnest prayers to the goddess, they were eventually granted the gift of five daughters, revered as the 'Pancha Maatakkal' or the five sacred mothers. Endowed with the goddess's blessings, the family flourished and erected a grand temple dedicated to Goddess Balabhadrakaali on the seashore, known as the Kadappuramkaali Temple, symbolizing the goddess Kali by the sea. Over time, the temple may have succumbed to natural disasters or invasions. Nevertheless, devout followers continue to offer daily prayers and rituals at this sacred site. Another narrative suggests that the family's ancestors revered the goddess within their home, marking her presence with symbolic items like chilambhu, peedom, and vaal. The current temple structure is believed to be the third iteration since those early worship practices. Regardless of the varied interpretations, a common thread persists in an age-old tradition venerating the formidable Goddess Balabhadra, the protector of her devotees from difficult situations. Numerous family members recount instances where their fervent prayers and unwavering devotion were answered by the benevolent deity, underscoring the timeless connection between the devotees and the Devi.
