Sree Marattil Kottaram Bagavathy Temple

History

Maradu Kottaram Bhagavathy Temple is associated with the Summer Palace of the Cochin Royal Family in Maradu, Ernakulam district. In ancient times, this area was covered by a thick forest where many sages performed austerities. When a natural calamity struck and destroyed the forest, the land came under the ownership of the Paravoor Royal family, who then constructed a palace there. Subsequently, the royal family relocated, and at that time, the Goddess previously worshipped in the palace was consecrated in a temple built on the site. The responsibility of managing the temple was initially entrusted to Mangalapally Achan, who held the significant position of Pattola Menon in more the palace. However, when running the temple became challenging, he transferred the rights to the Nair families of Maradu, Kundannoor and Poonithura in the 1053rd year of the Malayalam Era. The Goddess is worshipped as Kali, commemorating her return from defeating the demon Darika. The annual festival is renowned for its fireworks, conducted competitively by two groups known as Thekke Cheruvaram and Vadakke Cheruvaram. The fireworks commence after the first Kathina (a firecracker associated with temples) is ignited at the nearby Pandoth Siva temple. During the festival, the deity is taken from the Kottaram Temple and first brought to this temple. The Kottaram Bhagavathy temple is under the administration of the Cochin Devaswom Board.
