Legend says that during their stay in the forest in Thretha Yuga, Sree Rama asked Hanuman to bring an idol of Lord Subrahmanya from the river Sarayu to be consecrated at the present-day Peralassery. As Hanuman failed to return even as the appointed time for the consecration ended, Sree Rama consecrated his Peruvala (big bangle) there. Seeing the distraught Hanuman who came after the consecration, Sree Rama asked him to consecrate the idol one foot to the north of the place where he had made the consecration. He asked Hanuman to worship the idol there himself. He also decreed that anyone who came to worship
more the idol he had consecrated should also do the same with Hanuman’s consecration to be blessed. Hanuman performed the consecration as instructed by Sree Rama. To get the water for the ceremony he struck the ground with his tail and a pond was formed there. That place became known as Markatassery (Markata in Malayalam means the monkey). This name later came to be Makreri.
