Karunamuttam Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple is closely associated with the ancient Pandavarkavu Devi temple at Muthukulam. During the reign of the King, priests from outside the state were brought for the rituals in the temple. They were given land at the spot where the Karunamuttam temple stands today. These Brahmins had an idol of Siva which they worshipped. Later when they returned to their native place, they left the idol fixed under a tree. The land they were given were lost. The place where the tree with the idol under it stood, came to be with the Travancore Devaswom Board. But regular pujas were not performed there. In more the 1970s, the N.S.S.Karayogam of Ponnassery Munnila took the initiative and built the sanctum and performed the consecration. Thus, regular pujas were started. Now the outer structures of the temple have been built with the support of the local devotees under the Temple Advisory Committee. The pond in which the ceremonial bath of the Devi of Pandavarkavu temple is performed is situated close to this temple
