Kadamberi Chuzhali Bhagavathy Temple

History

This temple is at Kadamberi about 5km from the famous Parassinikadavu temple of Kannur district. The Chuzhali Bhagavathy is believed to be the Yogamaya devi who was born at the same time as Lord Krishna. When Kama came to see the baby, who was predicted to be the one to kill him, he saw that it was a girl. Still, he swung her up to smash her to death. But the baby rose like a Chuzhali (whirlwind) from his hand. When the daughter of the King of Aryanadu came of age, she was found to be possessed by some force. Astrological consultations revealed the presence more of three devis in her. The Devis expressed the desire to go to Malanadu. The King summoned Viswakarmav and had a huge, beautiful ship made. In this he placed three idols of Devis made of gold and decorated with precious stones. As soon as it was ready to set sail, a strong wind started blowing and the ship sailed on its own. The ship touched shore at Cherukunnu Aayiramthengu seashore. People of the locality as well as the local rulers came to see the ship. Two of the local rulers took the idols that seemed to be more valuable. The third one was taken by Ozhuviletam Samanthan Nayanar. The ship rose up when the third idol was taken revealing the importance of the idol. As Nayanar was carrying the idol, the soldiers of Kolathiri chased him.  While running to escape from them he saw a washerman on the banks of the river. He made the man run away telling him that the soldiers were coming to catch him. Then he disguised himself as the washerman and kept the idol covered with a cloth. As he continued his journey, Nayanar had to remain hidden in thickets at many places. Wherever he stopped, the presence of Chuzhali Bhagavathy was felt; including the place where he had taken the place of the washerman. In this temple it is the washermen who perform the rituals. In the end Nayanar buried the idol at Vadakke kavu.  Nayanar died of asphyxiation, believed to be as the result of the curse of the Goddess whom he had buried. Later the idol was recovered when the place was dug up. The place where the temple stands today was a Gurukula. Once a man who was passing that way saw a beautiful girl climb up a Kadambat ree which grew in profusion there. He informed the teacher of the Gurukula about it. He brought the girl to the Gurukula. This Gurukula later became the temple of the Chuzhai Bhagavathy who had come as the girl.
