Akkikavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Akkikavu Bhagavathy temple stands on the Choondal Kuttipuram Highway, in Thalappilly Taluk in Thrissur District, about 5 km from Kunnamkulam. The temple is believed to be more than 800 years old. The name Akkikavu is associated with the legend about the origin of this temple. One of the ancestors of the Nair - Panikkar family of Pattathil Melethil who lived near the place where the temple is situated today, was an expert in Maddalam, a percussion instrument, and he used to perform in the more Palace of Shaktan Thampuran. While he was staying in the Palace, he contracted smallpox and he was sent back to his house. The sick man, weakened by the affliction had a vision and he reached the place where the temple is situated today. There he had an astounding vision of the Goddess in the middle of high flames. With this sight of the Goddess, the man was miraculously cured. On being informed about this the next day, Sakthan Thampuran ordered that a temple for the Goddess should be built there. The King allotted land and property for the temple and entrusted the Pattathil family with the management of the temple. The temple came to be known as Agnikavu (A temple that came from Agni-fire). As days passed this became reduced to Akkikavu. The idol of the Goddess Durga with a benevolent smile and endowed with four hands, is consecrated here. As the management of the temple became too expensive for the family to handle, a committee of the devotees was formed on the 17th of August, 1987 (1st of Chingam,1163). The managing committee elected by the devotees has been in charge of the affairs of the temple. Some of the important offerings here are Paal Paayasam, Koottu Paayasam and Chuttu Vilakku.
