8 kilometers away from the Thiruvananthapuram Railway station is the Vattiyoor Kavu of Sree Sastha overflowing with the presence of the Lord. In this Temple besides Sastha there are Ganapathy, Siva, Subramanyan, Durga Devi, Nagas and Brahma Rakshas. Saniswara Pooja, Neeranjanam etc are performed here for the removal of Sani Dosha. Many devotees come to the Temple to attend Shashti Vratam, Thinkalazhicha Vratam (performed on Mondays), Ayilya Pooja etc. The name of the place Vattiyoor Kavu has been derived from the name of the Temple. In ancient times this place was a forest area. Women used to go to the forest to gather firewood. Once
more they saw a stone kept inside a basket, tried to lift it but could not. They gave this news to the people of the place. The people visited the place and saw it. They brought Astrologers and learned men to find out more about it and they detected the presence of Sastha in the stone. Poojas were performed and from that day this area came to be known as Vattikavu. This Vattikavu is now known as Vattiyooor Kavu.
