Legends proclaim that Sage Parasurama established 108 Siva temples, 108 Durga temples and 108 Shastha temples in Kerala for the protection of the land. The Sree Thrikai Siva temple at Narangapuram in Thalassery is one of those Siva temples. Legend says that when the fury of the sea destroyed the seashore, Lord Siva, who is consecrated facing the sea on the west, stopped the waves with his hands. That is why the place is known as Thrikkai (The holy hand). The sea withdrew leaving a pond near the temple with sea water. Lord Siva is consecrated as Sharabheswara here. When Maha Vishnu had taken incarnation as
more Narasimha and destroyed the asura, his anger could not be controlled even after the killing. The Devas requested Lord Parameswara to find a solution. The Lord took the form of a deer and confronted Narasimha. Maha Vishnu understood who the deer was and became calm. As requested by MahaVishnu Lord Siva retained the form of Sharabheswara.
