Manikkiyil Sree Bagavathy Temple

History

Manikkiyil Sree Bagavathy Temple traces its sacred roots to a bygone era when it served as a haven for wandering sages and seers. In this ancient locale, these spiritual luminaries erected a sanctified enclave dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mother. Performing various religious rituals such as yagas, yagnas, and vedantic recitations, they achieved spiritual enlightenment through deep meditation (Dhyanam), leaving behind remnants of their dwellings (Namboodiri Illam) in the temple precincts. Over time, the Brahmins who initially cared for the enclave moved on, and the responsibility passed to the Edavalathu Tharavadu, a nearby eminent family. Recognizing the profound presence and power of Bhagavati in the enclave, more a decision was made by some members of the family, along with enlightened local residents, to construct a temple in accordance with strict scriptural practices. A committee was formed to oversee the construction, with generous donations from family members and local landowners. A trust, supported by the community, was registered for this purpose. Under the leadership of Kadachira Gireeshan Master, an Ashtamangalya Prashnam was conducted in June 2003. Based on the findings, a master plan was crafted by the renowned Kanipayur Sri. Krishnan Namboodiri. Brahmasri Velloorillathu Parameshwaran Namboodiri, a wise sage, was appointed as the Chief Priest (Kshetra Tantri). Naga Prathista took place on September 13, 2004, under the guidance of Pambumekattu tantris. In 2005, Kodum Bhadrakali and Perumbesan enclave underwent renovation and sanctification, and a temporary Balalaya was constructed to house the deities. Construction of the Sreekovil commenced in the same year, overseen by Olavara Sri. Kunhiraman Melasari and Makreri Sri. Raghavan Ashari. By 2007, the Manikiyil Bhagavati Temple had taken majestic form, resembling a Big Temple (Maha Kshetram). A grand Prathista Brahma Kalasa Mahotsavam celebrated from June 12 to 20, 2007, marked the temple's opening. Since then, daily rituals (Nitya Pooja) have been conducted in the morning and evening by the dedicated Main Priest (Mel Shanti) KIzhara Illathu Sri. Shankaranarayanan Namboodiri. Guided by the benevolent grace of Manikiyil Amma and supported by devoted followers, the ongoing construction of the temple is a testament to its progress. However, a substantial sum is still required to complete the temple according to the original master plan. Let us all fervently pray to Nithyaswaroopini Manikiyil Amma for guidance, blessings, and prosperity for ourselves, our families, and society at large.
