Munampam Sreekrishna Swamy Temple

History

It is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centres in Kerala. The temple is located in Eranakulam district on Vypin-Munambam route at Munambam junction. It is about 29 kms from Eranakulam town facing the east. Three poojas are performed daily. The legend of the temple is associated with the people of Munambam village. Generally, the people of Munambam are the devotees of Sree Krishna. They used to go and worship in the first Vishnu temple of Kerala named Kulashekharapuram in Kodungalloor and the Sree Krishna temple of Pallipuram (Kochi Kovilakam).  But only high caste people could enter inside the temple.  So, the fisher folk of more this place decided to form a temple culture and custom of their own.  According to their desire they formed a spiritual society, where they could conduct their spiritual activity like prayer and Bhajan.About 120 years ago they went to Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple and got a picture of Sree Krishna to which Pooja had been done. They kept this picture and every evening performed Bhajans. A spiritual person became their Guru and showed them the way to conduct Bhajans etc. Along with this, a library was established for the development of the Fisher folk.  Both the activities were performed in the same Mandir (Temple), spiritual as well as the functioning of the library. The Munambam Araya Maha Sabha was formed later, which led to their development in the field of their profession, education and social activities. To fulfill their desires the people of Munambam village decided to convert the Sree Krishna Bhajana Mandiram into a temple and for this they formed a committee and started the work. They appointed Bhramasree Azhakath Shastrasarman Namboodiripad as the temple Tantri. The temple construction is based upon the Vaastu Sastra and this Sree Krishna temple is considered to be one among the Mahakshetras. In the main temple there is the Sree Kovil, the Namaskara Mandapam, the Agrasabha and the Big Beli Kallu, Dhwajam and the Dwara Gopuram. Inside the Sree Kovil there is Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Maha Saraswathi installed on a Single Peetam. This is very rare among other temples. Outside the Nalambalam there is Sastha, Navagraha Mandapam, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, Karinagayakshi and in separate Mandapam inside the Nalambalam there is Ganapathy. Subramania Swamy also has equal importance and position in the Nalambalam. Poomudal, Udayasthamana Pooja, Birth Star Pooja, Ekadeshi, Ayiliya Pooja in every month, Navagraha Pooja, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Karkidaka Month Celebrations, Mandala Pooja for 41 days etc are the major festivals and poojas here. The temple festival is celebrated in the month of Meenam during the star Rohini. The festival lasts for 9 days and ends with Arrattu in the Arabian Sea. From the day the festival begins, the idol of Sree Krishna is taken around on the elephant daily. A grand procession accompanied by musical instruments follow the Arrattu. Navaratri is celebrated for 3 days every year. Akshayathritheya and Sree Krishna Jayanthi are celebrated grandly in this temple.
