Eswaroth Mahadeva Temple

History

Eswaroth Mahadeva Temple, also known as Sree Mahadeva Temple Eeswarth, is an ancient religious site with a rich history spanning over 2500 years. Located 6 km away from Mattannur and Kuthuparamba town, this sacred temple is perched in a hill area, emanating a serene and tranquil ambiance. Dedicated to Ugramoorthy Siva, the temple features revered idols or prathishtas of Siva, Ayyappan, Kuttichathan (Mahavishnu), and Nagam (snake). One distinctive aspect of this temple is the presence of rare features not commonly found in other Mahadeva Temples. Within the sreekovil, there are shadadhara prathishtta, garbanyasa prathishta, yoganali, napumsaka shila, nidhikumbam, and adara sila kurmam. A remarkable geographical feature near the more temple is a water stagnation, known as neerurava, atop the hill. This natural phenomenon contributes to a cool and refreshing atmosphere, enhancing the sanctity of Eeswaroth Mahadeva Kshethram. The temple has a significant historical background, having been under the control of Vita Pazhassi Maharaja in the past. It also faced an attack by Tippu Sultan, during which a Brahmin was tragically found killed inside the sreekovil. In its heyday, the temple was surrounded by 40 Brahmin families, adding to its cultural and social significance. An ashtamangalya prasnam conducted here unveiled the temple's storied past and ancestral roots.
