Akliyath Siva Temple

History

Konoth Gurukkal was on his way back after the festival of the Vayathoor Kaliyaar temple, a famous Siva temple in Kannur district. There was a Namboothiri also with him. Gurukkal had worn a Thoppikuda (an umbrella that can be worn on the head like a hat) on his head. As he walked, a bird came and sat on the umbrella. Occasionally it would fly away and then come back to sit on the umbrella. The two men reached Konoth family house near Azhikodu.  As Gurukkal kept the umbrella down, the bird flew up to sit on the Elanji tree in the compound. As some strange sounds more were heard, Gurukkal looked carefully at the Elanji tree.  He saw that it was the bird that had come with him that was making the noises. He also found that his umbrella had become too heavy to be moved. This made him feel that there was some mystery connected with the bird.  On astrological consultation it was found that Vayathoor Kaliyaar had come with him in the form of the bird. So, with the help of the Namboothiri with him, he consecrated Kaliyaar at the place where his Kalari had been functioning. Kili ethiyath (the place where the bird came) later became Akliyath.
