Annamanada Mahadeva Temple

History

Annamanada Mahadeva Temple, with roots dating back to ancient times, houses a swayambhoo idol. According to legend, the temple's origin is linked to an incident where the blade of an agricultural woman, while cutting grass, accidentally touched a granite stone, causing it to ooze blood. A deva-prashnam revealed that the granite stone possessed the divine essence of Lord Siva. Subsequently, efforts were made to consecrate the idol, leading to the construction of the temple. Originally under the ownership of ten Nampoothiris manas, including Maprampalli, Kashamkottam, Kitaykavattam, and Kuraykattuvalli, the temple later became a significant focal point in the conflicts between the Zamuthiri, Cochin, and Travancore Rajas, more who asserted control over its affairs. Historical records indicate that in 1713 A.D., Villarvattam Swaroopam attacked the temple, taking away the canoe used by the temple authorities and setting the temple ablaze. Seeking protection, the Nampoothiris approached the Zamuthiri Raja, who entrusted the temple's safeguarding to Mangatt Achan. In 1761 A.D., a treaty of peace between Travancore and Cochin led to Zamuthiri losing control over the region. The Cochin Raja then authorized Vellos Nambiar to oversee the temple's affairs. Displeased with this arrangement, the Nampoothiris approached the Raja of Travancore, handing over the temple's administration to him. Following various disputes between Cochin and Travancore over the temple's authority, Ward and Conner, two officers of the British Government, adjudicated the matter in favor of the Cochin Raja during 1814-15. However, Justice J.C. Hanington granted special privileges to Travancore. Facing challenges in enforcing these privileges, Travancore relinquished its rights in 1902. Subsequently, the Cochin Raja administered the temple until 1950 when it was transferred to the Cochin Devaswam Board. The temple is currently administered by a Devaswam Officer appointed by the Board.
