Vengamala Bhagavathy Temple

History

This is one of the most important temples of the hill tribes in south Kerala. The rituals that are usually followed in the temples of Kerala are not followed here. The Goddess is satisfied with the worship offered by the hill tribes. It is believed that Muthan Kani consecrated the Devi at the place where the temple now stands and started offering poojas according to the customs of the hill tribes. There are two idols in the sanctum facing each other. One is the gentle form of the Goddess and the other is the fierce form of the Karinkali. Such consecrations are very rare more in the whole of India. The belief is that the Goddess would be the benign blessing power before the helpless devotee while she will be the fierce Durga before those who have committed some wrong. People of all religious beliefs can worship in this temple. This is the only temple in Kerala where facilities for the Muslims to offer prayers? according to their rituals has been arranged.
