It is believed that an elder member of the Puthussery family who was a yogi, used to worship the Goddess at his house. Once the Goddess appeared before him and asked him to build a temple for her so that more people would be able to worship her. The temple was built and many people used to visit the temple. This was renovated in 1927 and 1971. Years later a devotee, living in Manacadu in Thiruvananthapuram, who was not connected with this temple in any way, had a dream in which the Goddess asked him to rebuild the temple. The man went around looking for
more the temple that he had seen in his dream. Once he went to look at a temple near Kattakada but was disappointed. On his way back, he happened to reach Puthukulangara and saw the temple. Realising that this was the temple he had seen in the dream, he informed the local people of his dream and his readiness to renovate the temple. The local people also joined in the effort and the present temple was built.
