This is one of the most unique temples in the whole of India. It is situated at Karikodu in Idukki district. It is referred to as Dakshina Kailasam . This is believed to be one of the 74 temples constructed by the Kings of the Chola dynasty 1800 years ago. The land where the temple stands was the venue for many Agnihothra maha yagas in ancient times. The main consecration is Mahadeva with Sree Parvathy, Subramanya and Ganapathi on one seat. The deities face the south and hence is in the form of Dakshinamoorthy as he gives wisdom to the Saptharshis. The Sreekovil, Sanctum more sanctorum, is unique in construction. There are many sculptures decorating the sanctum. There is a figure of a sanyasi which seems to have one head and three torsos. There is another one of two men engaged in Kalaripayattu (Kerala martial art). Sculptures of Sabarimala Ayyappan and Markandeya, another one which shows an elephant from one side and Nandikesha from the other side and Sabarimala Dharmashasthra with beard and mustache as is seen in the Golden replica (Thanka Anki) that is used to decorate the idol during the puja on the last day of the Mandala puja are seen on different pillars. On the western wall of the sanctum there are the idols of Maha Ganapathy and the Navagrahas in separate holes. The outlet for the water from the sanctorum is behind the sanctum. The custom in other Siva temples where the devotees break the circumambulation at the outlet is not practiced here. This is because the presence of Goddess Ganga on the Lord’s tuft is not seen here. On the eastern side of the sanctum there are five holes representing the Pancha bhuthas and Panchendriyas made on a single stone. In the month of Medam, when the rays of the sun fall straight, the rays enter the sanctum through these five holes. The Yogeswara consecrated here gets equal importance with the main deity.
