Legend says that Sree Rama came to Ugrankunnu in Velinalloor while going in search of Sita and met Sugreeva. Sree Rama promised to kill Bali to save Sugreeva and in return Sugreeva promised to help Rama in searching for Sita. Sugreeva knew that it was difficult to kill Bali as the power of the one who opposed Bali would also be added to Bali. But anyone who could cut the seven trees that stood on Malamchuzhi with one arrow would be able to kill Bali. Sree Rama knew that the seven trees were standing on a serpent that lay curled up in the water. So,
more Rama first poked the serpent with an arrow which made the serpent straighten up. When the seven trees came in a straight row, Rama cut them all with one arrow. This is the place known as Malanchuzhi, seen in front of the Velinalloor Sree Rama Swamy temple. This is the deepest part of the Ithikkara river and no one has been able to measure the depth here.
