Karazhma Devi Temple

History

Long ago, when royalty was ruling the country, a member of the Kuntil Mallissery Mana in Thrissur started on a pilgrimage to the temples in the southern region. He carried the idol of Goddess Durga in his bag and used to perform puja every day. After visiting all the temples and staying for a few days at Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple at Thiruvananthapuram, he started back. On the way back, he stayed for a few days at Mannadi Pazhayskavu temple. Pleased by the deep devotion of the Brahmin Mannadi Bhagavathy appeared before him in a dream and asked him what he wanted. He replied that more he wanted the chance to worship her at all times. The Devi transfered a portion of her effulgence into the palm leaf umbrella that he was carrying. The Brahmin started his journey even before sunrise. Soon a woman belonging to the Pulaya caste came before him. As was the custom in those days the man asked her to move away from his path. But she refused to do so and demanded to know where he was going at this hour. The Brahmin told her what had happened the previous night. Then she wanted to accompany him as she was an ardent devotee of the Goddess.  As there was no other way to continue his journey, he allowed her to walk a few feet behind him. Days later they reached Karazhma. The place was a forest area. The Brahmin had reached the place called Thituavimkunnu where there was the remains of an ancient temple and a platform on which a lamp was lighted. There was a pond on the north of the temple and a serpent grove beside it. The man found a divine effulgence in the place and decided that it was suitable for performing poojas. He kept the idol of the Goddess on a banana leaf and the umbrella near it. As he came back after a bath he saw that the umbrella was going around and round on its own and there was an unnatural glow to the idol he had placed there. An incorporeal voice told him that the Goddess had decided to stay in that place. The Brahmin went in search of the local residents to inform them about the occurrence. The local people informed the ruler Ayakkatt Kaimal about it. Astrological consultations were held and it was decided to rebuild the old temple. The platform where the lamp used to be lighted was seen to have the presence of Soundarya Yakshi. The sanctum of the temple was left open to the skies. The idol that the Brahmin carried with him was consecrated in the sanctum.
