Ravipuram Sree Krishna Swamy Temple

History

The Ravipuram SreeKrishna Swamy temple at Ernakulam is believed to be centuries old. It is believed to have been built by the Pazhoor Mana. From 1972, the temple has been under the Cochin Devaswom Board. The eminent historian Sri.A.Sreedhara Menon has recorded the occasion when Ravipuram temple played host to Guruvayoorappan in the 18th century. During Tippu Sultan’s raids in Kerala, the idol of Guruvayoorappan was taken to Ambalapuzha by boat. On the way there was heavy rain and wind and as the boat had come to the shore of the lake opposite to the temple, the idol was brought there and kept in the inner more part of the temple. There is a legend associated with the name Ravipuram too. Vilwamangalam Swamiyar was on his way to Ambalapuzha when he came to this temple. Nobody could give him a specific name of the temple. As Swamiyar looked at the temple he saw the sun rising behind the temple and named it Ravipuram to mean the abode of the sun.
