Aykunnu Pandavagiri Devi Temple

History

The Aikunnu Pandavagiri Devi Kshetram, located in the village of Venginisseri within the Paralam panchayat, is one of the most renowned among the 108 Durga temples consecrated by Parasurama during the Treta Yuga. According to legend, during their twelve-year exile in the forest, the Pandava princes, along with their wife Draupadi, sought refuge at this sacred site and undertook rigorous austerities (tapas). They were blessed by the Goddess of auspiciousness, prosperity, and benevolence. Draupadi, in particular, prayed for her husbands' victory in battle and for the boon of outliving them, and these wishes are believed to have been granted. This allowed Draupadi to depart from her earthly more life as a wife before her husbands, a blessing not bestowed upon Sita Devi or Rukmini. Such was the grace of our Devi! It is said that even before the Pandava princes arrived to perform penance, many ascetics had practiced severe austerities on the Pandavagiri hills in ancient times. After receiving Devi's blessings, the Pandavas continued on their journey, feeling fulfilled. Unfortunately, as time passed, the temple fell into a state of disrepair due to neglect. Even when the temple owners managed its affairs, they couldn't prevent this decline. The situation deteriorated to the point where daily worship ceremonies could no longer be performed regularly, leading to a complete cessation of worship.
