This temple is believed to be of ancient origin
but not much evidence is available to prove it. In the past it belonged to the
Brahmins of the Koopakkara Madom, who held a leading position in the Ettara
Yogam that had a significant role to play in the history of Travancore. The
area where the temple is situated in Thiruvananthapuram was known as Edapalani (Small
Palani) after the temple, as Balasubrahmanyan is consecrated here. Through
usage the name changed to Edapazhanji. The idol of the Lord used to be brought
from Koopakara madam and from this temple taken to the Mahadevar temple.
